Team Whatevros for B.A.S. Rides Again!

Despite a dismal forecast for Sunday’s Boston Brain Tumor Ride, Team Whatevros for B.A.S was excited and ready to ride. Luckily the rain held off and our team of 16 riders all crossed the finish line before the skies opened. This year our team welcomed five new riders, including Hemenway parents Brenda Dostie and Patty Hebert. Hemenway teachers Michelle Gibson and Becky Lepow returned for a second year and completed the 50 mile ride! Our team raised $15,325 this year, including more than $500 of donations from the Hemenway staff. Team Whatevros has now raised over $65,000 in three years for the National Brain Tumor Society. Although my brother Brian was unable to ride alongside us this year, it was for a wonderful reason. Brian and his wife will welcome their first baby in just a few weeks! With the perfect MRI he had at Duke on Tuesday, a baby on the way, and the hundreds of supporters behind him, he is floating on cloud nine. Miracles do happen!

Thank you to everyone who donated so generously! Your support is so greatly appreciated.

Ms. Nolan

Hemenway Climbs To New Heights

For three afternoons last week, Mrs. Capuano and Mrs. Schlegel opened up the gym and invited the students to Climb Higher. There is a climbing wall in Hemenway's future and to help raise the funds necessary, this unique fund raiser was put together. For over two hours, each afternoon, the students climbed the cargo nets, and the ropes as well as participated in many other fun activities.

Feedback from my own daughter was, "It was a blast! Can I do that again?"

The three day event raised $1271 towards their goal of $8,000!

Thank you Hemenway parents for supporting Physical Education at our school.

Anyone wanting to make a donation please contant Mrs. Cap.

Jump Rope for Heart

Last month all Physical Education classes participated in the Jump Rope for Heart program sponsored by the American Heart Association. Each student was asked to challenge themselves by selecting an achievable goal plus raise the bar over and over again to get their heart rates up.

Students constantly made changes as they practiced all jump rope skills. They were encouraged to go home and share information with parents about all the progress made during the week.

Donations were made and collected based on conversations and communication between home and school. A $10.00 donation earns a jump rope for a great effort.

The Third Grade Multiplies Up A Fortune!

All the third grade classrooms at Hemenway participated in a Multiplication-a-thon. It was quite a success!

For the fourth year in a row, our third graders have raised over one thousand dollars for the Greater Boston Food Bank. To be exact, this year they raised $1,448.97!

The students were excited to hear the news yesterday! Also, they are very proud of this community service and their multiplication skills.

Helping those that help

Annie's Bookstop, in the Nobscot Plaza, is bringing the ideas of recycling and giving full circle. When Hemenway families bring their books, both adult and children's, to Annie's, Paul will donate $1 per adult book and 50 cents per children's book to the PTO. All books not picked up by Paul will be deposited in the Got Books bin at the school. All donators need do is identify themselves as a Hemenway Community member.

Another win win for the community, and the environment.

Thanks Paul.
